Since early May 2025, Tan Cang Cat Lai Port has officially received and put into operation four (04) modern Hybrid Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes.
This milestone not only marks a significant step forward in the localization of high-tech port equipment in Vietnam but also represents a remarkable achievement resulting from the strategic collaboration between MITSUI E&S (Japan), Saigon Newport Corporation, and a network of leading Vietnamese manufacturing and assembly enterprises.
Among these partners is Huynh Thy, contributing to the role of a container crane manufacturing partner.
Hybrid RTG Crane – A Green Solution for Modern Seaports
Amid the global logistics industry’s shift toward sustainable development, the Hybrid RTG crane has emerged as a breakthrough solution, serving as a strong testament to the future commitment to “green ports.” This advanced crane not only delivers impressive fuel savings of 60–64%, but also significantly reduces CO₂ emissions, contributing meaningfully to environmental protection.
The deployment of Hybrid RTG cranes at Cat Lai Port marks an important milestone, clearly demonstrating Huynh Thy’s commitment to supporting the development of green and sustainable logistics in Vietnam. To realize this vision, Huynh Thy has been and continues to work closely with leading global partners in port technology and green energy. This collaboration not only ensures the delivery of state-of-the-art equipment, but also accelerates technology transfer, elevating Vietnam’s seaports to a new level of operational efficiency and environmental friendliness. It stands as tangible evidence of the power of collaboration among industry leaders in driving sustainable transformation.
With the support of its strategic partners, Huynh Thy is further motivated to accelerate its production expansion plans, aiming to increase the localization rate to over 70%, manufacture an additional 20–40 cranes in the next phase, and gradually bring “Made in Vietnam” port equipment to regional and international markets.
For the first time, a Hybrid RTG crane has been manufactured in Vietnam
The RTG Hybrid crane handover event in Cat Lai quickly attracted the attention of the media, with major newspapers such as Tuổi Trẻ, VnExpress, Thanh Niên, Quân đội Nhân dân, HTV9 simultaneously reported. The articles highlighted Vietnam’s first successful manufacturing of Hybrid RTG cranes – a modern line of container handling equipment, bringing outstanding efficiency in terms of fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness. This affirms Vietnam’s technical and production capacity in a field that requires high technology. This is a strong step forward, laying the foundation for an autonomous and modern heavy industry, demonstrating successful cooperation between partners.

This event is a vivid testament to the cooperative capacity, innovation and pioneering spirit of Vietnamese businesses in mastering high technology. This is not only the pride of Huynh Thy alone, but also of the entire chain of partners who have contributed and affirmed the position of Vietnam’s supporting industry on the regional and world map.
Vietnamese Capabilities – A Strategic Solution in a Challenging Economic Environment
The cooperation in container crane manufacturing in Vietnam, especially in the context of a volatile global economy, delivers significant strategic value to both the industry and the national economy:
- Reducing import dependency: Achieving technological self-reliance in critical port equipment to reduce risks from global supply chain disruptions.
- Enhancing domestic technical capacity: Training and developing a skilled workforce of engineers and technicians, while advancing the nation’s overall technological capabilities.
- Optimizing cost and lead time: Strengthening after-sales autonomy to reduce logistics costs and minimize equipment downtime and waiting periods.
- Building a domestic value chain: Driving the growth of the mechanical engineering and automation industries, creating jobs, and generating higher value-added output.
Realizing the “Made in Vietnam” vision through a network of trusted domestic partners
The success of the project to manufacture four “Made in Vietnam” Hybrid RTG cranes stands as a clear testament to the effective collaboration between MITSUI E&S, Saigon Newport Corporation, and a consortium of Vietnamese enterprises, including Huynh Thy together with other trusted domestic partners.
The close and well-structured coordination among all parties has played a key role in realizing the vision of manufacturing high-tech port equipment in Vietnam, affirming the country’s localization capabilities and strengthening the position of the domestic supporting industries.
Lilama 18 – A strategic partner from the very beginning
In this collaborative project, Lilama 18 — a partner that has been involved since MITSUI E&S’s earliest projects in Vietnam in 2015 — continues to demonstrate its capabilities by manufacturing key steel structures with high precision, meeting Japanese standards.
These critical components form the structural backbone and deliver exceptional stability for the Hybrid RTG cranes, serving as clear evidence of the advanced mechanical fabrication expertise of Vietnamese enterprises.
